The Big Duck- Novelty Architecture at its Best

World famous novelty architecture keeps life fun. The Big Duck located in Flanders, New York is our local favorite and it is on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1931, this duck was first used to advertise and sell eggs.

Our affinity for this duck may tie in with our own family history. My grandfather owned Peter’s Poultry that sold and distributed eggs on Long Island many years ago.

There’s a big lawn and picnic tables at this “Big Duck Ranch.” If you visit when the shop (inside the Duck!) is open, you can go in for some novelty gifts, fun media articles and pictures, and even some historic information from the lovely store clerk.

There is no fee to park, use the grounds or enter the duck. Public restrooms and picnic tables available.

Cost– If you’re traveling towards the East end of Long Island, this is a quick no-cost stop. They have a gift shop, but there are no fees to access the Duck or park. What you spend is up to you.
Parking & Transportation– There is free parking at the Big Duck with ample space for the typical amount of visitors throughout the day. You can check local bus routes to the Duck since it is on a main road, Route 24.
Location– The park is located at the beginning of the North and South Fork split on Long Island. This is one of the best pit stops if you’re traveling out to either fork. It will take you slightly off course, but it’s worth it.
Day Trip or Overnight– If you live within Suffolk County, this is an easy day trip. There are hotels in the area if you decided to combine this with other adventures and stay awhile.
Experience– The Big Duck is novelty architecture at its best. It is world famous and has influenced the world of architecture despite some of the criticism naysayers supplied. It has been rated by a local radio station as one of the seven wonders of Long Island and is adored by generations of islanders. How can you pass that up?

Combination– There is actually a lot to do in the Riverhead area if you wanted to combine this trip. Here’s but a few suggestions: Riverhead Raceway, Riverhead (LI) Aquarium, Tanger Outlets, Splish Splash Water Park, Sears Bellows County Park.
